
An attorney and nurse practitioner with more than thirty five years of experience in the health care industry, Sue combines her clinical experience and law degree to guide others in patient safety, health care quality and the development of health care delivery models in response to changing health policies. Sue’s primary goal is to convey to her students, audiences and readers, an understanding of how these policies affect the reality of people’s lives and necessitate responses for the best outcomes possible.
Susan Kendig, JD, MSN, WHNP-BC, FAANP
Sue Kendig believes that collaboration in a blame free environment will help all health care professionals learn from the systems issues which directly affect patient outcomes. She also sees the Patient Safety Organization (PSO) as the institution which provides the central frame work in which all health care providers can reach the goals of reducing and eliminating adverse medical events by improving safety, quality and cost effectiveness.
Since her admission to the Missouri Bar in 2008, Sue has focused her legal and policy consultation practice in the areas of patient safety, primary care, and health care delivery transformation, including Accountable Care Organization (ACO) and Medical Home development.
Sue also:
- Acts as Outside Counsel for the Missouri Center for Patient Safety, providing assistance to the Center in meeting the requirements for federal listing as one of the first ten Patient Safety Organizations (PSO) in the country and continued consultation related to PSO implementation.
- Is the Lead author, CONCEPTS: Guiding Principles for Risk Management, a resource manual designed to assist primary care providers enhancing patient safety through process improvement, published by Healthcare Services Group, Jefferson City, Missouri; and
- Is an Advisor to the Missouri Foundation for Health Primary Care Medical Home project.

Sue earned her JD from the University of Missouri – Columbia, School of Law and her MS in Nursing (Women’s Health) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She is presently a member of the Missouri Bar.
Sue practices law in the area of Patient Safety Organization (PSO) regulation and implementation, patient safety in primary care and health care delivery in response to health care reform.
