HealthGrades Releases Patient Safety Study

The most recent HealthGrades study on Patient Safety in US Hospitals reveals nearly 1 million patient-safety incidents occurred among Medicare patients from 2006 to 2008. Research revealed that one in ten patients who experienced a patient safety incident died as a result. The report also recognizes recipients of the 2010 HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™, including seven hospitals in Missouri.

National Quality and Disparities Report Issued – Hospitals Improve, Other Providers Questioned, Need for Focus on Infection

This year’s national report, issued by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, reveals the quality of care provided by hospitals continues to improve faster than care in other settings. Measures used for the report show hospital care improved by almost 6%, while other provider groups showed less improvement, including in preventive services and chronic disease management. Healthcare acquired infections were identified as a priority area; however professional groups have expressed concern about the report not reflecting recent initiatives that have resulted in improvements in infection prevention.
