Why should we join the campaign?
Get credit for the work you are already doing. Your hospital is already working
on a number of the 5 Million Lives interventions, since they are aligned with
other national health care initiatives supported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission. By joining the Campaign, you can become
a part of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s national recognition
and take advantage of free tools and resources provided to facilitate implementation.
How do we join the campaign?
Participating in the campaign is free and simple. The first step is to submit
the 5 Million Lives Campaign enrollment form. Beyond that, hospitals need only
submit:
- "Hospital Profile" information. This includes data such as number of licensed beds, teaching status, average daily census, etc.
- Monthly inpatient "raw" mortality data (deaths and discharges). Interested hospitals can also submit intervention-level process data, but this is not a requirement of the program. All data is easily submitted on a password protected extranet for enrolled hospitals and kept confidential.
Do hospitals enrolled in the 100,000 Lives Campaign need to re-enroll?
Hospitals do not need to re-enroll but should re-affirm their commitment by
updating their hospital profile on the IHI Web site and identifying the interventions
they’re working on. By updating your profile and submitting facility
mortality data by June 8, hospitals will be considered “fully committed” to
the 5 Million Lives Campaign.
Does the 5 Million Lives Campaign include the interventions from the 100,000
Lives Campaign?
Yes. The six campaign interventions from the 100,000 Lives Campaign are included
in the 5 Million Lives Campaign. Those interventions are:
- Deploy rapid response teams
- Deliver reliable, evidence-based care for acute myocardial infarction*
- Prevent adverse drug events
- Prevent central line infections
- Prevent surgical site infections*
- Prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia
Are there any new interventions?
The 5 Million Lives Campaign includes six new interventions, including:
- Prevent pressure ulcers
- Reduce methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection
- Prevent harm from high-alert medications
- Reduce surgical complications*
- Deliver reliable, evidence based care for congestive heart failure*
- Get boards on board
* Interventions partially or fully aligned with both CMS & The Joint Commission.
Do hospitals have to commit to all of the campaign interventions?
No. Hospitals are only required to adopt one of the twelve interventions; however,
there is no limit to the amount of interventions hospitals may work on. Hospitals
may already be working on many of the interventions as they are aligned with
other national and state health care initiatives.
What types of support and resources will the campaign offer?
Everything you need to know to implement change at your facility is available
for free at www.ihi.org/IHI/programs/campaign including:
- How-to guides with instructions for implementing the intervention, including changes and measures
- PowerPoint presentation with notes to introduce the intervention to your organization
- Free conference calls on each intervention plus recording of past information calls
- Access to mentor hospitals on each of the twelve recommended interventions
- Tools and improvement stories
All of these and other tools are at your fingertips simply by joining the 5 Million Lives Campaign.
How should hospitals submit Campaign data?
Hospitals may submit data directly to IHI online at www.ihi.org/extranetng,
or hospitals may choose to submit data through one of a few Campaign-authorized "Data
Intermediary" organizations, which will then forward the information to
IHI. Recorded training sessions and detailed instructions explaining how to
use the IHI data submission tool are in the Materials section of the Campaign
website. Hospital-specific data will not be published.
