The Missouri Center for Patient Safety is a private, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to fostering change throughout Missouri's health care delivery systems and across the continuum of care. The Center's activities take a non-regulatory, collaborative approach bringing consumers and providers together to develop and implement strategies and systems to improve safety. Through its work, the Center strives to be the leader in Missouri in providing solutions and resources for reducing medical errors and improving patient safety.
The Missouri Center for Patient Safety (MoCPS) was established by The Missouri Hospital Association (MHA), the Missouri State Medical Association (MSMA) and Primaris in response to recommendations from the Governor's Commission for Patient Safety. The Commission, charged with recommending changes to improve patient safety, met during 2004 to study all aspects of patient safety. The Commission produced a report recommending establishment of a private center to bring together healthcare facilities, professionals, consumers, state agencies, and others to coordinate, communicate and lead health care safety and quality improvement efforts in Missouri.
The Center's vision is "a health care environment safe for all patients, in all processes, all the time".
The Center's mission is "to be a leader in providing solutions and resources to improve patient safety and the quality of health care delivery by conducting activities in collaboration with health care providers, physicians, purchasers, consumers and government".
The Center's goals are
- To serve as a central resource of patient safety information for providers, physicians, consumers and others interested in patient safety
- To expand learning from patient safety initiatives by collaborating with national and state organizations, providers, physicians, consumers and other stakeholders
- To establish and maintain a voluntary, confidential reporting system that is consistent with national patient safety organization criteria and requirements to identify patient safety concerns, establish a focus for improvement activities and to identify best practices for sharing
- To improve the safety and quality of care provided to citizens through a collaborative approach to education, information, resource sharing and learning
